A4 posters now for sale, illustrations in black & white

Just uploaded to my shop! You can now buy the illustrations form my first novel 'The Land of Lost Thoughts' as a more economical size of A4 for only £5.99.

These are printed on a matt white paper and supplied flat for you to frame or simply stick on the wall! I realised the A1s may be a bit daunting for some of you who genuinely like my artwork but don't have the wall space. Because of the nature of the book my illustrations follow several themes which are of possible interest to different groups. As I've mentioned before I did a fair bit of research into Crystal Palace and drew upon my own childhood memories of the place to draw things like the 'No. 3 Bus'. I did research the number plates used at that time by London Transport and also double checked the posters and theatre events such as Les Miserables, happening at that time just to see if I remembered correctly, plus I did have to get it right in the book.

The picture like, 'Picnic; Devon' is drawn from a memory of my own Grandmother's picnic hamper but I did use artistic license with the spot cup which I seem to recall was a very thick almost bakerlite plastic in a pale or duck egg blue I suppose it would be called now. The picture, 'Emily's room' is complete fabrication. I remembered an old valve record player of my mother's from the 1950's and then placed various other items around to recreate that 80's feel in the room, namely the AdamAnt poster. I did use an actual poster I have which was a tear sheet from a comic way back then which I have kept ever since in an AdamAnt folder I have, just to get the braiding right you understand! I do actually have lots of lyrics written out by a friend and some of what I have written in the novel about Emily and her friends is based upon real memories of my own experiences at that time.

I will expand upon the intricasies of my novel another time but for now there you go, £5.99 for an artprint from my book, you cant say fairer than that eh?

Artwork available from facebook Marketplace!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for looking again at my artwork. The Limited editions are now available via Facebook Marketplace but it is simpler to buy directly from here my own website. Dont forget the Giclée's are all output on to the finest Artists papers, my Buddha print is actually on an environmental Bamboo a new paper with fantastic colour holding guaranteed for 60 years to retain its color and not fade. the texture is very slight but really adds to the overall look and feel of these prints. The Artists Guild recommends this paper by Hahnemüele and I can see why. I will number and sign everyone, I still have 95 prints of each of the images 'Buddha Awakening and also 'Family' the purple flower image.
the imagery is of a closed faded almost finished flower with the symbols falling like seeds. the symbols represent my own family in terms of their construction, 3 petals for three children, 5 strokes for five members of the family etc etc. the use of symbols in eastern art really interests me and the use of lotus flower has presided strongly in my work since 2008. The idea of dormancy and then awakening is present in 'Buddha Awakening' the obvious gold symbols of birds, lotus and others directly scribe into the ear of the awakening statue denoted by the gold leaf and more graphic use of block color.

I wanted the symbols to appear according to the light and time of day which Im pleased to say they do! I used gold paint mixed into the Guache so it glitters and has created a unique experience for the viewer, you really have to stand still, view then move around and stand still in order to capture all the imagery and symbols which emerge in the different light sources. Another experiment is the artificial light which strangely doesn't reveal all. It does create a harsh revelation if you have direct overhead lighting and in both paintings it reveals a strong band of previously hidden colour and images, however if you move you will see more or less. the yellow light is also a player in the visual game, if you have energy saving bulbs you will get a dimmer more white light on the image.

The limited editions do employ some of this technique but it is very hard to capture this sense of movement around the piece in a reproduction. this is why I have decided to add some gold leaf and gold paint to overylay the Giclées to add to the viewers experience plus it adds to the overall uniqueness of each print. You really do et something unique and one off to you!

I hope this gives you some insight into the art work and the concept behind my recent series 'Deity'. please take a look and forward this on to your friends. Ill post again soon.

Bromley Exhibition of Book Launch!

Hi all,

The Private View went really well! It was lovely to see many friends and family come out in support of my artwork and the new book. Although this blog is not the most appropriate place to whitter on about the new book, I felt some of you may be interested in this new book as it contains alot of poetry and my own concept of poetryart®.

I will be setting up a new blog for it and posting some of the poems, or you can join my facebook page 'PoetryArt lovers in Bromley Kent UK' where I upload new poetry for your perusal and also the artworks in low-res files.

All of it is available as posters in smaller sizes and the big A1's. I was inspired by the religious A4 posters I was subjected to as a young teen, which you can pick up in Christian bookshops. They often have Psalms on them or indeed just a thought for the day. The idea that people would want words rather than pictures on their walls is very interesting to me and I advocate the written word as something to be reveled in. I studied typography 'on the job' so to speak and I became very interested in its layout and the impact it can have on the reader providing they understand grammar. This is a disappearing art-form in my opinion, the 'dumbing-down' of language to suit the masses is a great shame. I cant understand why people would want to do this, surely we should be educating and encouraging the complex nature of English?

The use of grammar greatly changes the emphasis of what is written and the use of typography can further enhance the experience of the written word. I'm a great advocate of choosing the correct font and line spacing! The onset of DTP, as it was known back in the early 1980s, meant that anyone with a simple Apple Macintosh could create their own literature or advertising materials. This however led to an erosion of correct English and the Americanisation of our language which is a great pity. Not that there is anything wrong with American but it is a completely separate language with its own grammar and spellings! Lets see what we can do about saving English and its foibles, maybe Ill start another group on Facebook? The use of DTP led to people rushing through designs, which in those days was my main interest as I was training as a graphic designer, but in hindsight it also led to poor typesetting and language skills. People simply wrote to fit or allowed their program to hyphenate in an appalling manner running text all over the place. the default settings were often not changed and it soon became apparent what literature was 'DTP'd' and what had been professionally set and laid out. Of course in those days the only typesetting available was from dedicated typesetters and through the printer themselves. It took the form of Galleys and the setting up of each galley required a trained Union professional as the typesetting machines were huge, cumbersome pieces of specialist kit allowing only one line of text to be viewed in an awful green akin to the PCs at that time, of course things like justification or lining left had to be input much in the same way as code for your PC when wanting to access the correct drive.

Apple of course changed all of that and opened up the world to an easier more visual way of creating type. However it did also lead to the erosion of skill sets, which some may think a good thing following on from the 1980s strikes in the UK and Union clashes with the police. The Print Union being one of the main culprits at that time. If perhaps people had seen what was happening within the industry and had crystal balls they may have taken a more sympathetic approach.

Back to the current use of grammar and typography and we have the American format of language taking over our PCs and Macs for email, people don't change their settings and so the spell checks are inadequate and incorrect! The grammar is also flagged incorrectly and I think actually makes people less thinking and they don't use their skill sets acquired at school. Argh School in the UK, thats a whole other story which of course directly relates to this subject. Ill get back to you on that one!

I hope you read the book and by all means flag the incorrect grammar and spellings as the final editing was done under the duress of cancer, so you are bound to find tons of mistakes.

Siobhain Hill.
